what does AFAIK stand for?

2019-08-27 02:44:17 UTC

Crime had been rising steadily since the 60’s. 1980 was the first time the homicide rate reached double digits per 100k. People were freaking out.
*Robocop* was filmed 7 years after that. Peak crack epidemic hysteria.
The idea “what can we do to stop this” and “but what about muh freedoms” were big issues being discussed.
*Robocop* was yet another film in a long line of films capitalizing on these themes.

Oh.

2019-08-27 02:46:29 UTC

But you know also general sci-fi, transhumanism etc etc

2019-08-27 02:47:21 UTC

I hope one day workers walk around with mechsuits.

2019-08-27 02:48:33 UTC

THey already do

2019-08-27 02:48:46 UTC

cara, AFAIK stands for "as far as i know"

2019-08-27 02:48:50 UTC

Nice.

2019-08-27 02:48:53 UTC

Oh.

2019-08-27 02:49:02 UTC

Hyndai factory already uses them for heavy lifting of fragile parts

2019-08-27 02:49:13 UTC

I thought AFAIK was the name of a team

2019-08-27 02:49:24 UTC

How agile are those suits?

2019-08-27 02:49:35 UTC

Not very

2019-08-27 02:49:47 UTC

Like can you twist to pick up a tool behind you?

2019-08-27 02:49:49 UTC

They are a bit slow

2019-08-27 02:49:59 UTC

But they do not need to be fast

2019-08-27 02:50:00 UTC

why would a mobile forklift be agile lol

2019-08-27 02:50:20 UTC

Well, I meant more of like flexible.

2019-08-27 02:50:51 UTC

Like could you have at someone?

2019-08-27 02:50:58 UTC

Hyndai has its own metal foundry and a whole "HUGE ELECTRICAL MOTORS" section

2019-08-27 02:51:08 UTC

Eventually the tech coming out of places like Boston dynamics will make augmented LBE like this unnecessary. You’ll just be able to tell a robot “Go move that thing from here to there.” And it’ll do it.

2019-08-27 02:51:14 UTC

Things there need to be handled with care, but they are damn heavy

2019-08-27 02:51:25 UTC

So the suits are the best copmpromise

2019-08-27 02:51:49 UTC

Can be done with a forklift, but you need a driver with too much skill for that

2019-08-27 02:51:51 UTC

Well, the boston dynamics robots are nice.

2019-08-27 02:52:02 UTC

Suit does not need training

2019-08-27 02:52:09 UTC

But could they work in construction?

2019-08-27 02:52:36 UTC

robots do what they are programmed to perform

2019-08-27 02:52:48 UTC

As forklift driver I can tell you straight up: That robot suit will take more training to use safely.

2019-08-27 02:52:55 UTC

A lot more

2019-08-27 02:52:57 UTC

So the question is rather "can we programm them enough to be of any value"

2019-08-27 02:53:25 UTC

Is it hard to get a forklift license?

2019-08-27 02:53:31 UTC

Not hard at all

2019-08-27 02:53:39 UTC

@Scale_e why do you think that?

2019-08-27 02:53:57 UTC

And this is in Australia, one of the most over regulated safety conscious places on earth.

2019-08-27 02:54:12 UTC

I have seen them in action, they are following the natural movements of a person

2019-08-27 02:55:03 UTC

Forklifts in a foundry is a fine art though
You don't get to spill molten metal more than once

2019-08-27 02:55:34 UTC

Human in a suit can operate that hot vat with more control and finesse though

2019-08-27 02:55:50 UTC

I guarantee you, you’ll have to be licensed to use one. That licensing will include, at a minimum, everything that a forklift driver has to learn. You’ll then have to learn how to operate the suit on top of that.

2019-08-27 02:56:09 UTC

Probably
