It can be a few strategic military bases in the region

It can be political capital in countries, etc.

So it's bad enough that we should start an empire but not that we can't confiscate their assets in the UK?

I mean, we can nationalise their assets, but that's not the best thing to do

Since it will hurt us as well. Credit rating, future investment, etc.

Now, what we can do which will benefit us, is look to control the raw resource producing areas that China are dependent on

But if we're creating an empire mainly based on the use of softpower through debt diplomacy and then a tiny bit of hard power through military force in some select instances, then no I don't think anyone will complain
