Playing devil advocate - not sure if taxes were really high here during communism, Boop. The issue was less about government taking a lot and more about you not getting much to buy stuff there's little of as well.

You can’t really get tax money if the only people paying anyone is the government

I suspect taxes were quite low, it's just everything else was kinda crap too. Less burden, but less potential for anyone to get anywhere, unless they had party connections.

I really liked the franchise but the second book was a disappointing trainwreck to me

The book? It was good. Haven't seen the movie, didn't seem that appealing to me but I am in general less eager for old movies.

The book/story wasn't too long so you may give it a try even if you don't have much time.

A lot of people died after the movie was made due to a scene they ended up having to take out of the movie because the film got fucked up

But again, no real idea about the movie. Seen some random scenes. It seems the kind of movie where you get 2 minutes long shot of some guy standing there full of thought to 'set the mood', before it switches to another shot of his face so you can truly immerse yourself in how he's thinking for another 30 seconds before he actually moves his ass to go and do something.
