My theory (guesstimate) is that there is always a rise of authoritarianism and suppression of freedom whenever society is facing hard times.
War, poverty, conflict, bring about immigration, crime, and general strife, even in countries that arent facing times of war.
So with that, you've got really rough times, even for Western countries. And because of that, the authoritarian types are getting louder, people listen to them more, thinking they've got answers, and thus they fall prey to Social Justice ideology, cultural marxism, feminism, etc.
