The short answer (as to the bombing campaigns) is that our bombs weren't very accurate. We'd try to blow up a factory or rail head and it just wouldn't work. But if you just bomb the shit out of the whole city you can kill and render homeless enough of the workforce that it impairs production.

Germany never developed a heavy bomber, it was a completely new technology. Took a while to figure out how to make them work. Like the first raids had horrendous casualty rates. So we changed strategy where the bombers were used as bait so we could hit the Wermacht with our own fighters. Then when most German planes and pilots were removed we could run heavy bombing raids.

Germany as a nation seems to have an issue dealing with actual tactics. Blitzkrieg is an effective tactic but it's not exactly nuanced or hard for the enemy to figure out. It basically the rouge's sneak attack. Brute Force when no one knows you're coming
