This is an interesting point, but free will only states that an animal can choose what it does. To some extent it can evaluate its situation and make its own decision, even if that decision is based off of instinct. So, you’ve ended up providing proof to my point

You said an animal can “evaluate a situation”...is that not reason? Instinct is really just a bodily function occurring in the mind of an animal. ...I will just reiterate and then I’ll go home that the two basic possessions of an immortal spirit are the gifts of understanding and free-will. Unless you believe animals have immortal souls, they cannot have free-will. I’ll end on a happy note, that we both believe animals are a part of God’s creation and should be treated with dignity no matter how small, or what purpose they provide for man who is the very image and likeness of God. Are we not blessed to possess the very same face that Our Lord condescended to possess? Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered! Let those who hate him flee before his Holy Face!

Yes, it’s absolutely clear that animals can “reason” in some cases. They can clearly evaluate situations and their opponents. They do exhibit reasoning just not in the popular sense of the word, but no I don’t believe animals souls are eternal
This is based off of the fact that Godly wisdom and discernment is not like our human wisdom. It’s saying, “make me wise in the ways of true wisdom, but don’t let me become so arrogant that I believe that wisdom is my own”
