In a class rn about 19th century European diplomacy and we're discussing the crimean war and all my 'peers' are trying to describe the concept of the balance of power without actually calling it that (they don't know what it is) and after about 15 mins of that, the prof starts to describe the concept of the balance of power in the same way you would describe it to a 5 yr old

Balance of power is how the Anglos maintained their commercial supremacy over the rest in the continent they gained through practicing protectionism and then kicking away the ladder by preaching free trade, all whilst not having to invest in a huge army to keep the status quo.
