Again, you do not have to register a trademark to have trademark protections. It just makes it easier for you.

2019-04-14 01:30:19 UTC

If it mattered he would come up with it

2019-04-14 01:30:39 UTC

actually it doesn't look that expensive

2019-04-14 01:30:48 UTC

@Grodd no but it does allow a chance for it to be lost

2019-04-14 01:31:03 UTC

Only if the trademark is deemed abandoned.

2019-04-14 01:31:07 UTC

Which it clearly was NOT.

2019-04-14 01:31:12 UTC

that too

2019-04-14 01:31:33 UTC

It is expensive Jas.

2019-04-14 01:31:38 UTC

some guys tried to make an alcohol called "The Pirate Bay" at some point, but were forced to change the name

2019-04-14 01:31:56 UTC

390at a glance

2019-04-14 01:31:58 UTC

i see the problem, if you just google it it shows up right next to it. huh

2019-04-14 01:31:58 UTC

For a multiple media-based platform like Tim Pool's Subverse as well as lawyer fees it's easily thousands of dollars for an international trademark.

2019-04-14 01:32:04 UTC

bigger issue than i thought

2019-04-14 01:32:05 UTC

That's pennies to save a brand

2019-04-14 01:32:08 UTC

yeah 390 is tiny

2019-04-14 01:32:12 UTC

It is not that cheap.

2019-04-14 01:32:15 UTC

I thought it'd be like at least 10 grand

2019-04-14 01:32:30 UTC

Google it bro. 390

2019-04-14 01:32:40 UTC

It would be on the order of at least 1k to probably closer to 5k for something as big as Tim Pool's project scope.

2019-04-14 01:32:44 UTC

Dude, that's only the BASE cost.

2019-04-14 01:33:25 UTC

Like if you only trademarked for say... a weekly comic print. But not for a cartoon and a merchandise branding and a book which would all require their own filings.

2019-04-14 01:33:56 UTC

The Subverse news project has more scope than just one medium as its end goal.

2019-04-14 01:34:20 UTC

But even if you only count news videos.

2019-04-14 01:34:27 UTC

true, but holding one would likely help his case

2019-04-14 01:34:27 UTC

That's just the filing cost at base.

2019-04-14 01:34:35 UTC

Tim would likely need to hire a lawyer as well.

2019-04-14 01:34:43 UTC

Easily at least $150 more for just one hour of work.

2019-04-14 01:34:58 UTC

You can see how this goes past $1k for just one scope.

2019-04-14 01:35:00 UTC

as it stands he has no legal precedence to get them to change their name outside of the US

2019-04-14 01:35:22 UTC

The other curious thing is that they're a US company but filed the UK. Is that correct?

2019-04-14 01:36:06 UTC

You're foolish to think you should EVER file a trademark you seriously intend to regularly use by yourself and not with a lawyer. You can actually screw yourself over more that way than by not filing until necessary.

2019-04-14 01:36:36 UTC

Although I do think Tim should have made the investment earlier rather than later.

2019-04-14 01:36:59 UTC

definitely

2019-04-14 01:37:03 UTC

No they are UK company iirc

2019-04-14 01:37:27 UTC

Or have a UK arm

2019-04-14 01:37:51 UTC

they're based in NA tho

2019-04-14 01:37:55 UTC

according to wikipedia

2019-04-14 01:38:18 UTC

which makes it seem even more suspect that they knew about Tim's project

2019-04-14 01:39:08 UTC

Right.
