@EnderOctanus i was thinking about your idea about tracking down records of jews from before the war and after, to try to work out how many have gone missing. it wouldn't be a precise science, but i suppose one place to start would be looking at people with birth certificates, who had no death certificate? though, i suppose many records probably got destroyed during the war, so it might be a bit inexact - but still could say something. another idea is looking at drop of birth-rates in the jewish areas after the holocaust

It might be hard since there are variables such as how many got shipped off, changed their identities or like left the country our of their own volition to avoid persecution. But you could get a rough estimate

see, i had asked myself the question, "if i had access to the records, how would i prove the holocaust took place?" and it's actually a difficult question

or, what was its scale

as opposed to "did it take place"

i'm happy to accept the photos of piles of bodies, skeletons, and mass graves that presumably exist indicate that it at least -took place-

so the question is the scale

A lot of those records were destroyed during the war

i suspected that might be the case.. shame

I think the holocaust happened and there were a lot of atrocities carried out against the Jews and jypsies along with disabled people and LGBT people. Like I feel that it’d be Interesting to try to find the scale of it, but given records being destroyed it’d be hard

so even with access to all extant records, it's hard to actually guage its full scale

They did this kind of math but it lead to some mistakes (like overestimating Dachau and underestimating the Einstsgruppen). Bloodlands by Snyder goes pretty in depth on what killings occurred where and how. A big problem is that much of the holocaust happened in the East. Stalin wasn't exactly a fan of historical accuracy.

I can honestly get behind reparations for slavery. In that you classified them as slaves and not simply black people, because there were non black slaves and black slave owners so race isnt the correct thing to divide people by. And that doesnt even get into the issue of post 1865 immigration and their descendents and their race and people of mixed race and just how mixed race, you cant pay reparations on self identified levels of racial oppression. What you gotta divide people by is slaves and non slaves which like OBVIOUSLY, then I can get behind financial reparations in taxes for slavery being paid into the abolishment of modern slavery sure, if you wish to say we as a free country built upon the back of enslaved labor which- I dont know I agree entirely with but I can at least get behind the goal enough - owe the victims of modern slave trade the chance to be free. Sure I get that, if free people dont stand up to those who enslave others no one will ever stand up for the enslaved because they are unable to stand up for themselves. Thats what the civil war was.
