why do americans seem to make such a big deal about stressing the difference between THEIR system of constitutional republic and a 'democracy'
is this some 7th grade civics class thing?

2019-05-18 16:19:55 UTC

i mean it's not all americans, but i must have seen at least 100 make this exact point the same way

2019-05-18 16:19:59 UTC

can't just be a coincidence

2019-05-18 16:20:22 UTC

To people who aren't morons its nothing

2019-05-18 16:21:12 UTC

but progressives are very attached to direct democracy concepts

2019-05-18 16:22:28 UTC

MK11: How dare you objectify women and show too much skin! Change it!

2019-05-18 16:22:30 UTC

Life is Strange: 16yo kids fucking on screen is perfectly fine

2019-05-18 16:22:48 UTC

2019-05-18 16:23:26 UTC

"no" on both counts

2019-05-18 16:38:45 UTC

@Tero Because we get bashed over the head with the false idea that we are a democracy constantly.

2019-05-18 16:47:19 UTC

but you are

2019-05-18 16:47:40 UTC

just democracy via representatives, rather than directly

2019-05-18 16:52:15 UTC

We are a constitutional republic. Our votes are not direct, and can even be dismissed by the representative in the case of the Electoral College.

2019-05-18 16:53:10 UTC

We do not vote on Federal structure aside from presidencies, and see above as to why this is not democratic.

2019-05-18 16:53:27 UTC

We are a democracy LOCALLY.

2019-05-18 16:53:43 UTC

But the local authorities answer to Federal ones.

2019-05-18 16:53:48 UTC

you vote on federal representatives

2019-05-18 16:54:44 UTC

and the ones not voted on directly, are chosen by people who are

2019-05-18 16:55:04 UTC

Yes, who are not supposed to do anything but represent their state. They were never meant to be *part* of the Federal machine so much as a method of checking its power.

2019-05-18 16:55:57 UTC

Almost the entirety of public officials are completely unelected, such as FBI Director.

2019-05-18 16:56:26 UTC

sure, but that's the same in every european and anglosphere country

2019-05-18 16:56:36 UTC

none of whom would consider themselves not a democracy

2019-05-18 16:56:52 UTC

A democracy does not have all of these extra steps and half-powers.

2019-05-18 16:57:03 UTC

well, it does tho

2019-05-18 16:57:23 UTC

No it doesn't, to say so is to misunderstand the systems.

2019-05-18 16:57:38 UTC

what you're talking about is a system which doesn't exist in any country

2019-05-18 16:57:45 UTC

I know.

2019-05-18 16:57:54 UTC

it's not a real thing

2019-05-18 16:58:19 UTC

democracies all have elected representatives who do the mundane things of running the country for the people

2019-05-18 16:58:21 UTC

Nobody wants a true democracy.

2019-05-18 16:58:57 UTC

Okay so you know how there are different types of monarchies?

2019-05-18 16:59:07 UTC

even switzerland where they can veto federal laws by direct vote has representatives who make law
