Most automakers sell them at a loss, and cover those losses with the hybrid and gasoline cars that _do_ make money, such as Ford's _massively_ profitable F150. Others are like Tesla. They just lose money. Shit tons of it - $1.5 billion in Tesla's case, to be specific.
