and

2018-05-22 05:24:56 UTC

What kinds of people does the current alt right have?

2018-05-22 05:29:57 UTC

Well, Milo Yiannopoulos tried to use the term to label conservatives that were tired of the GOP and partisanship, but Spencer and friends were already using it to label themselves.

2018-05-22 05:31:01 UTC

The earliest usage seems to be from 10 years ago.

2018-05-22 05:32:05 UTC

Is this a fair assessment?
```The alt right was initially a movement for conservatives who didn’t agree with the conservative movement. They started out to promote ideals, especially free speech and Border Control. But eventually, people like Richard Spencer, who wants a white ethnostate, and literal neo-nazis, took advantage of their free speech ideals, and after a CNN interview which framed Richard Spencer as the leader of the Alt Right, The movement has dissolved into a loose connection of White Ethnostatists, Nationalist socialists, and White Identitarians.```
Well, can't trust too much on wikipedia.
2018-05-22 05:33:04 UTC
It's not wikipedia
2018-05-22 05:33:09 UTC
I wrote that lol
2018-05-22 05:33:31 UTC
I wanna be sure I'm not mis representing them
2018-05-22 05:34:04 UTC
I've heard Milo used the term before he knew Spencer was using it.
2018-05-22 05:34:15 UTC
So it's a bit confusing.
2018-05-22 05:34:47 UTC
I saw that, in his cathy newman interview, where he said "A fresh new movement for conservatives with new ideas"
2018-05-22 05:34:56 UTC
Later Milo gave up on trying to define the term himself, and just let Spencer have it.
2018-05-22 05:35:20 UTC
Now he just refers to it as him being a bit misinformed about the usage of the term.
2018-05-22 05:35:23 UTC
CNN framing Spencer as the leader of the Alt-right didn't help
2018-05-22 05:35:48 UTC
But, there are black people on quora who also claim to be alt right
2018-05-22 05:36:01 UTC
And i'm confused
2018-05-22 05:36:06 UTC
It's a bit like the Skeptic™ Community... it's not well defined, in the first place.
2018-05-22 05:37:06 UTC
I don't think it's fair to say it "started as...", because the root of the term, "alternative right" fit more than one group.
2018-05-22 05:37:33 UTC
when i first heard it, i thought alt-right was a broad term for an alternative to neocons or something
2018-05-22 05:37:56 UTC
The change didn't happen within a single group, it's just one group kept using the term, the others decided to abandon it.
2018-05-22 05:38:31 UTC
mostly because of the ties to white nationalism
2018-05-22 05:38:49 UTC
This man claims to be one of the original founders of the alt right
2018-05-22 05:38:57 UTC
He's black
2018-05-22 05:39:47 UTC
interesting
2018-05-22 05:39:59 UTC
Spencer's alt-right wants an authoritarian ethno-aristocracy.
2018-05-22 05:40:19 UTC
Which is obviously anti-freedom.
2018-05-22 05:40:29 UTC
yeah
2018-05-22 05:41:21 UTC
his form of the alt-right is definitely more statist/fascist
2018-05-22 05:41:33 UTC
Doesn't he want to make a white aristocracy in space?
2018-05-22 05:41:42 UTC
or Something?
2018-05-22 05:42:10 UTC
yeah
2018-05-22 05:44:58 UTC
This Frank Smytt seems to be one of the OG alt-rights.
2018-05-22 05:45:30 UTC
From what he's saying, yes
2018-05-22 05:45:33 UTC
I sent him a PM, we'll see if he replies.
2018-05-22 05:45:46 UTC
I wanna be sure I represent every side properly
2018-05-22 05:46:09 UTC
I don't really know how it was used before. Frankly, I think it's too late to take it back.
2018-05-22 05:46:25 UTC
i agree
2018-05-22 05:46:50 UTC
Seems like "paleocon" is the most accurate description.
