Problem with M1 is the weight of the ammo. Too much bulk to carry around for the troops.

One fully loaded clip has some heft to it.

I bought a 1000 round case of 308 and its fucking heavy

a 1000 rounds of 223 is not nearly as heavy

the garand clip is probably most of the extra weight

no the real reason is the M1 has a low fire density compared to a lower caliber, lower recoil weapon

the quick fix was the M14 but that also sucked at modern combat

the AKM was the best infantry weapon of the war hands down

the overwhelming majority of the ground war was firefights within 200 meters behind heavy cover, perfect for a 7.62x39 rifle

The AKM is great in terms of reliability and cost to produce. But I wouldn't call it the best infantry weapon simply because its the most commonly used. The platform does have problems
