Problem with M1 is the weight of the ammo. Too much bulk to carry around for the troops.

One fully loaded clip has some heft to it.

I bought a 1000 round case of 308 and its fucking heavy

a 1000 rounds of 223 is not nearly as heavy

the garand clip is probably most of the extra weight

no the real reason is the M1 has a low fire density compared to a lower caliber, lower recoil weapon

the quick fix was the M14 but that also sucked at modern combat
