I know a guy who did time in the joint, he said he played checkers all the time.

He said he would watch guys play chess and just couldn't get what they were doing.

He was in the joint for 18 months, never thought to ask how to play. I'd just about guarantee anybody whose into chess would've shown him chess.

What I like about chess is that each piece

has it's own strategy to how it works and how to use it with other pieces

I've seen guys who use knights to great effect, I always liked rooks and bishops more, I like pincering someone into a position they can't escape without losing.

A boxing in strategy, just like starcraft, I'd play protoss and build cannons outside the enemy base stifling them building anything without dealing with those cannons. By the time they got past them, I'd have an army waiting for them or enough cannons that I'd just push into their base with cannons.
