Consumerism is the result of corporate oligarchy

2018-08-10 20:59:50 UTC

Corporations have far, far, far more power than they should have

2018-08-10 21:00:06 UTC

They can effectively circumvent democracy

2018-08-10 21:00:20 UTC

They're effectively immune to the law

2018-08-10 21:01:24 UTC

If a corporation does something illegal, they get fined a trivial sum and use PR and the media to do damage control. Within a month you'll forget.

2018-08-10 21:01:44 UTC

Maybe even shuffle board members around, but nothing really happens

2018-08-10 21:05:09 UTC

For starters, ban all lobbying

2018-08-10 21:06:29 UTC

Ban "donations". It's obvious corruption and everyone knows it, but everyone with enough power to change it is already corrupt. Politicians shouldn't be allowed to accept money from anybody for any reason.

2018-08-10 21:07:54 UTC

Politicians shouldn't be allowed to vote on issues where there's a conflict of interest just like a jury

2018-08-10 21:12:03 UTC

Lol they are elected to vote on things

2018-08-10 21:12:13 UTC

Thats literally how the system works

2018-08-10 21:12:34 UTC

He lives in this planet. Conflict of interest

2018-08-10 21:15:40 UTC

Politicians are elected *because* of their interests

2018-08-10 21:16:20 UTC

If he had no side in the topic at hand, why would people elect him in the first place?

2018-08-10 21:17:02 UTC

Nah, small-ish donations from individuals are OK. Anything other than that should be banned.

2018-08-10 21:17:19 UTC

I can get behind that

2018-08-10 21:17:57 UTC

Though I think the US is particularly bad in this regard.

2018-08-10 21:19:22 UTC

Regardless of what you think about Clinton, she was obviously still a part of her foundation and probably used it's expense account for personal reasons. I don't see how that's not illegal

2018-08-10 21:19:25 UTC

Individuals rarely are the ones donating it is almost exclusively corporations and foreign states

2018-08-10 21:20:08 UTC

@Fitzydog because its a charity which is given a high degree of privacy, making it easier to funnel money into re-election campaigns.

2018-08-10 21:20:50 UTC

@radeon I know how, I'm just asking why was she allowed to still be on their board/payroll. Trump can't do HIS business while in office, why was she?

2018-08-10 21:21:16 UTC

Because it's "non profit"?

2018-08-10 21:22:34 UTC

If you check the Wikipedia page on Wages in Europe Turkey has almost reached Moldovan wages...

2018-08-10 21:23:14 UTC

I would understand that reference if I could point out Moldova on a map...

2018-08-10 21:24:57 UTC

Lol this was decided by the supream court a long time ago

2018-08-10 21:25:04 UTC

Donations are free speech

2018-08-10 21:25:14 UTC

Even by corperations

2018-08-10 21:25:27 UTC

Which is bullshit

2018-08-10 21:25:31 UTC

How

2018-08-10 21:25:41 UTC

Ahh, but what wasn't decided was whether politicians can be limited in what they can *accept*

2018-08-10 21:26:01 UTC

Capital doesn't have voting rights, people do.

2018-08-10 21:26:05 UTC

What do you think is worth more?

2018-08-10 21:26:17 UTC

The time spent of the media talking about you?

2018-08-10 21:26:23 UTC

Or hard cash?

2018-08-10 21:26:42 UTC

Time spent
