If you see what the CDU has been pushing for, and what the the Democrats have been pushing for then you will see the similarities. Both parties push for universal healthcare systems and a strong welfare state. German economics have been strongly influenced by the government since the 2008 recession, with strong fiscal plans. Environmentalism is high on the priority list for both. Germany even shut down all of its nuclear power plants after the Fukushima disaster. Furthermore, the recent openness to accept refugees from a historically conservative party comes to show, that politics in Europe are more to the left than in the US. The US political system is by default more right leaning when compared to Europe's one. Many americans would consider the policies a left wing government in Europe implements completely outrageous and inconceivable, with the same effect the Republican party's policies seem outlandish in Europe.
Also the CDU itself is centre right, for a party which supports "christian democracy".
