From my 20+ years of watching motorsports, I've seen 2 profiles that get sponsorships very easily:
· Women
· Disabled ones
People don't care about your race or sexuality, it's all about having a vagina or being disabled.

It's not that you'll be rich... but you'll be able to do some really cool stuff even if you really aren't skilled enough.
Just breaking your legs wouldn't do it. You'd need to be properly crippled.

BTW, talking about "people that have maimed themselves more than once", you've reminded me of Doug Henry.
He had a supervicious crash in like 1995 or 1996, recovered completely after months and months without racing, then ended up crippling himself like 12-14 years later.

It's like he jumped off a 3-story or 4-story building into dirt.
He didn't race for a whole 6 months.
CRASH = June 1995
RETURN = February 1996
· Goes on racing for a decade
CRASH = March 2007, broke his back, got partially paralyzed
RETURN = September 2009, now in events for disabled people
Clearly not a quitter.
Motorsports is full of insane stories like Doug Henry's. There's one that is even more well-known: Alessandro Zanardi.
· CART champion, goes to F1 but doesn't have much success, goes back to CART, loses both legs, recovers and goes back to motorsports, later on starts competing in paralympic stuff and becomes multi-time Paralympic gold medalist...
He had a silly crash... that ended up with him being T-boned at like 200mph/320kph, which destroyed his legs almost immediately.
