I wouldn't mind living forever due to nanotech

2019-06-02 05:57:14 UTC

I could become, not a Borg but I could have little Borg like nanites in my body fixing stuff that goes wrong

2019-06-02 05:57:25 UTC

really @Maxthx ? why do you think so?

2019-06-02 05:58:08 UTC

oh gawd where to begin...

2019-06-02 05:58:28 UTC

well with nanotech the threat of a grey goo scenario is pretty important

2019-06-02 05:58:38 UTC

eventually it'll happen and people will think of 500 year lifespans as the norm. its only a question of when, IMO

2019-06-02 05:58:45 UTC

which is a scenario where a runaway nanotechnology rapidly expands without proper parameters

2019-06-02 05:58:48 UTC

ecological devastation

2019-06-02 05:58:55 UTC

im familiar. i dont think its likely

2019-06-02 05:59:09 UTC

expanding the lifespan of individuals is also a huge potential problem

2019-06-02 05:59:25 UTC

for example unless its rolled out universally, who receives the treatments?

2019-06-02 05:59:36 UTC

the rich live forever and the poor die younger and younger?

2019-06-02 05:59:43 UTC

the inequality gap expanding

2019-06-02 05:59:55 UTC

longer lifespans means more pressure on resources

2019-06-02 06:00:17 UTC

and we are already living in a situation where a number of resources are critically over stressed

2019-06-02 06:00:32 UTC

i dont buy the first one, the inequality gap, maybe in the beginning but why not say that for anything? cars, computers, hopsitals...its just like talking another leap forward

2019-06-02 06:01:03 UTC

for resources, two things- longer lives in youth mean bigger percentage of the lifespan working, rather than 40% being childhood and retirement

2019-06-02 06:01:49 UTC

and better technology would allow new things, such as floating farms, or farms in the desert in glass towers

2019-06-02 06:01:51 UTC

think we are focusing on the wrong resources here

2019-06-02 06:02:09 UTC

which do youmean?

2019-06-02 06:02:24 UTC

well depends on which you want to talk about

2019-06-02 06:02:29 UTC

how about sand

2019-06-02 06:02:42 UTC

80% of modern large scale construction techniques rely on concrete

2019-06-02 06:02:55 UTC

which requires a specific quality of sand

2019-06-02 06:03:02 UTC

which is becoming more and more scarce

2019-06-02 06:03:12 UTC

for a good time google Sand Piracy in India

2019-06-02 06:03:28 UTC

we'd have better tech. polycarbonites, etc. reliance on concrete would be obsolete

2019-06-02 06:03:29 UTC

same with electronics

2019-06-02 06:03:38 UTC

maybe

2019-06-02 06:03:54 UTC

but betting on technology to solve all problems is not a reliable planning method

2019-06-02 06:04:06 UTC

some techs might not pan out

2019-06-02 06:04:13 UTC

others might not be widely reproducable

2019-06-02 06:05:27 UTC

i think life extension will be like flying; once unimaginable and seen as impossible, but one day normal and people cant imagine not having it

2019-06-02 06:05:46 UTC

maybe 30 years, maybe 150, but IMO its inevitable

2019-06-02 06:05:49 UTC

its still the problem of accessibility

2019-06-02 06:05:59 UTC

even today... there are billions of people without access to vaccinations

2019-06-02 06:06:08 UTC

whatever populations get the life extension will gain prominence over those that don't

2019-06-02 06:06:18 UTC

which will amount to second degree genocide

2019-06-02 06:07:25 UTC

the drug companies that have developed cancer treatments are currently asking mark-up prices up to and including 500% above cost

2019-06-02 06:07:26 UTC

sometimes higher

2019-06-02 06:07:27 UTC

but why would it happen that way? it cvould have the opposite effect. it would be something widepsread. what you're saying might happen in the beginning, but if transhumanism was a big enough political/social movement, it would eventually have enough government influence
