and two of those laptops were partially broken and the third was a Macbook that was so old and slow it wouldn't run any modern software

I have an AMD Ryzen gaming desktop. My old laptop crapped out a couple weeks ago. Managed to pick up an open box Lenovo from Best Buy that was mis-marked so I got it for essentially half off new.

Just had to upgrade the stock hard drive to an SSD, which is cheap as hell nowadays.

but larger SSDs are still pretty expensive: a 960 GB SSD would have cost me around $300

Yikes. You can get some 1 TB drives for about $85 now, though I have to imagine prices where you are are much higher.

I don't use my laptop terribly often so I just picked up the cheapest 1 TB drive I could find. I have a NAS and cloud backup, so I'm not concerned about data loss.

Samsung has some good SSDs for a cheap price. I got a 1tb one for just under $200 CAD

That's my problem: I can import stuff from the U.S. fairly easily but anything over 300 GEL (about $100) is tariffed, which requires fees and a shit ton of bureaucracy

SD cards are getting pretty cheap too. You can get a 512 GB card for $75 on Amazon

Slow data transfer rate, but totally fine for a cheap, local backup

Storage is so cheap, you might as have 1-2 copies of everything important
