William, it has been my personal experience that people have no idea who Richard Spencer is or who the alt-right is. A lot of people just don't follow the news because it's depressing. People want to live their lives, enjoy their hobbies and guilty pleasures, celebrate birthdays and holidays and not be constantly screeched at about how to think.
People follow local news for weather and general updates on what's going on, they might have one national news program they watch once a week. The people on Twitter do not represent the normal thinking public at large.
