People prefer the freedom of cars. You can go where you want, when you want, without being held to a schedule.

yeah trains are really popular for freight since you can add more and more carriers and demand is pretty constant

passenger trains were still regularly used into the early 90s when they got regulated out of use. the rise of the automobile was in like the 40s and 50s

Did you forget that the ICC required railroads to continue operating multi-million losses on passenger trains? That only changed with the creation of Amtrak in 1971. Trains fell out of favor, and still are out of favor. You forget that the rise of the automobile ate up a majority of passenger traffic overnight from railroads
