After 2016, there was 1 layoff in early 2017 but it was small by comparison to previous years and then we didn't have any layoffs afterwards.

There is always a reason for the "gap" but the rapidly expanding gap is due to the injection of borrowed money into the economy. When the government hands a citizen $600 or $2000 or even $2400 a month, they rarely do anything at all with it to improve their ability to increase wealth. They simply spend it.
