I think the important distinction is that gerrymandering is done by officials to affect election outcomes. Parts California and NY want to secede because they are not accurately represented by the officials being elected. Geographically, most of the state is red (and I’m convinced that in a fair election more of it would be). So I think-though likely not feasible-it is fair for those conservative areas to want their own representatives that will reflect their values

East TN almost seceded from west Tn because they didn’t want to joint the confederacy and west did. They didn’t do it, but I think that’s a valid reason.
