10 good friends go out to dinner together. The bill
will be 1,000 $. The bill is divided in the same way as you pay tax:
- The first four (the poorest) pay nothing
- The 5th pays 10 $
- The 6th pays 30 $
- Den 7. 70 $
- Den 8. 120 $
- The 9. 180 $
- The 10th person (the richest) pays 590 $
The 10 people eat dinner at the restaurant every day and are satisfied with the settlement of $1,000. And one day the restaurant owner says:
- "You are such good customers so I will give a $200 discount on your dinner in the future"
A dinner for 10 people now costs $800 and you must still pay the dinner as the tax is paid.
The first 4 are not affected. They can still eat for free. But what about the other 6? How to share a discount of $200 so that everyone gets their share? They realize that NOK 200 divided by 6 becomes NOK 33.33. If you deduct that amount from everyone's expense, the 5th and 6th person get paid to eat.
The restaurant owner suggests that the right thing to do would be to reduce each person's bill proportionally. He then calculates what each person will pay.
The result is
- that now even the 5th person can eat for free.
- The 6th must pay 20,
- the 7th pays 50
- the 8th pays 90
- the 9th pay 120 $
and finally
- the 10, which now pays $520 instead of $590.
Everyone gets a lower price than the original bill and now in addition 5 of the people get to eat for free. Outside the restaurant, however, the group begins to discuss.
"I only save 1/10 of the discount of $200" says the 6th person and points to the 10th and says: "but he saves $70"
"Right, I only earn 1/10 of what he does, he also gets 7 times as much discount as me, it's unfair" says the 5th person.
- "It is absolutely true, why should he who has so much money get 70 $ back, when I only get 20 $, the rich should always have the most" says the 7th in curse
- "Wait a minute" (says the first 4 who ate for free) "we get nothing left from the price reduction, this system is made to take advantage of the poor and gives the most to the rich"
The 9 person is now standing angry at the 10th and the accusations of exploiting the poor, of greed and selfishness hail.
The next night the 10th person does not come to dinner. The 9 others think just as well and sit down at the table. When the bill comes, they discover something strange.
..They are missing 520 $.....
