well, only a few versions of it had a 20mm

2021-01-05 04:26:11 UTC

my question is: why arent there 20mm machine guns on modern mbts?

2021-01-05 04:26:54 UTC

the reason? turrets need to be as compact as possible but enough enough room for the gun itself and the crew, a 20mm autocannon, even a low pressure one, would take up way too much space inside the tank to really be of use

2021-01-05 04:27:22 UTC

France tho with the modern AMX series did have a 20mm coaxial, which was more to be used as a rangefinder instead of an MG

2021-01-05 04:27:42 UTC

but their tanks turret was, well it wasnt exactly compact and wasnt exactly well armored

2021-01-05 04:28:42 UTC

you can see just how massive the coaxial is in this pic

2021-01-05 04:29:03 UTC

Now we're talking about a tank? Gah you're too fast.

2021-01-05 04:29:27 UTC

speaking of stuff that isnt well armored

2021-01-05 04:29:27 UTC

hey someone mentioned a tank

2021-01-05 04:29:38 UTC

what about the new north korean tank?

2021-01-05 04:29:46 UTC

with its smoke launchers in the turret

2021-01-05 04:29:57 UTC

isnt that a pretty massive armor flaw?

2021-01-05 04:30:05 UTC

not exactly

2021-01-05 04:30:47 UTC

this concept has already been played around with other stuff, like the Polish PL-01 prototype stealth tank

2021-01-05 04:32:00 UTC

2021-01-05 04:32:18 UTC

looks like a modern CV-90

2021-01-05 04:33:46 UTC

well, the idea of the PL-01 was to be built onto the Anders light tank platform (which is already a pretty decent tank platform for what it is) and modify it to use technologies based off of Aircraft stealth tech, its sharp edges to bounce radar sigs and its black paint to absorb some of it

2021-01-05 04:34:28 UTC

its sexy af

2021-01-05 04:34:32 UTC

i wish more tanks looked like that

2021-01-05 04:35:13 UTC

which, while it was an aspiring idea. the vehicle would ultimately never leave prototyping stages due to the designers having absolutely no idea what kinda doctrine they wanted the vehicle to operate in

2021-01-05 04:38:03 UTC

but it would spark interest in American armor designers to look at the idea of stealth tanks but make it something that could actually work. Enter the Bae Systems thermal heat sync plates. an idea that essentually uses small plates that can absorbe or disperse the heat generated by the vehicle to make it look like anything it wants under Thermal vision, such as looking like a truck or like a cow

This is such a cool channel 👍

2021-01-05 04:39:00 UTC

here you can see some of it in use

2021-01-05 04:40:15 UTC

looks like a car thats ready for a summer trip at the beach on the right yes? well on the left it shows you its actual true form to a degree

2021-01-05 04:40:59 UTC

thats fucking awesome

2021-01-05 04:41:12 UTC

it's amazing how far technology has come since ww2

2021-01-05 04:41:33 UTC

Mhm

2021-01-05 04:42:44 UTC

Now the goal of Bea systems take on stealth tanks isnt full on invisibility, but essentially walking into a cave of lions qith a lion costume on

2021-01-05 04:43:21 UTC

And passing as a lion

2021-01-05 04:47:28 UTC

And honestly, its quite possible that America's 1st 4th gen tank has these thermal plates on it

2021-01-05 06:25:48 UTC

That’s a really old picture

2021-01-05 06:25:56 UTC

It’s from like 2010

2021-01-05 06:27:01 UTC

Using dazzlers and infrared smoke is far more cost effective for the same benefit

2021-01-05 06:27:39 UTC

Not to mention it’s more a show-off to prove how good BAE’s technology is rather than practical use

Stealth tech... Ever hear of Project Chemeleo?

Invisibility cloaks.
Predator style camouflage suits.
Giant holographic green screen style fabric walls to quickly hide "crash sites", among other things.

This podcast covers it very well.
