do ya'll think I should go with a flat plate for a backpack?

2020-11-24 18:11:38 UTC

good point bradyn. shrapnel is certainly nasty

2020-11-24 18:11:46 UTC

Backpack, flat would probably be fine

2020-11-24 18:12:02 UTC

Saves a few bucks

2020-11-24 18:12:38 UTC

im not so concerned with the price. I just want whats most comfortable/practical.

2020-11-24 18:12:52 UTC

Yeah I've gotten lead stuck in my arm before from steel target plates it hurts like hell.

2020-11-24 18:13:42 UTC

I would get this for a backpack.

2020-11-24 18:13:50 UTC

Steel armor or just a steel plate? The spall coats are meant to stop most of bullet fragments.

2020-11-24 18:15:26 UTC

But they don't always work the bullet tends to just slight between the plate and the coating then come out into your arms, legs, or neck.

2020-11-24 18:16:04 UTC

I guess this is a no-go for civies?

2020-11-24 18:16:38 UTC

That's the problem with lots of body armor companies.

2020-11-24 18:16:54 UTC

Sorry bad link.

2020-11-24 18:18:13 UTC

Yeah for hesco armor I would buy it from t-rex arms I have heard they are a good company that stands behind there products.

2020-11-24 18:19:08 UTC

has any one thought about putting a steal lip on their plates to catch or deflect spawling?

2020-11-24 18:19:09 UTC

https://www.trex-arms.com/store/Hesco-L210-Special-Threat-Plate-Set/
It would have to be thick steel and would just add weight in the end.

2020-11-24 18:20:18 UTC

I guess so. :/

2020-11-24 18:21:02 UTC

Yeah besides good military grade plates aren't that much more.

2020-11-24 18:22:20 UTC

https://www.ar500armor.com/spall-frag-tests

Obviously you have to take with a big grain of salt considering it's their own company doing this but it seems like they changed their coat at some point from the harder bed coat to a new design.

2020-11-24 18:22:22 UTC

Nice guide bradyn..it helps

2020-11-24 18:23:07 UTC

Glad I could help. More patriotic Americans with armor the better.

2020-11-24 18:25:04 UTC

Hesco plates are pretty good IMO

2020-11-24 18:25:24 UTC

The thing with ar500 is that it isn't NIJ certified either so the military and law enforcement won't use it which is a big turn off for me personally.

2020-11-24 18:26:13 UTC

I know the Level 4 AR500 is NIJ.

2020-11-24 18:26:29 UTC

I knew a police officer who bought his own ar500 and he said he took 3 rounds in it, but he was issued ceramic armor.

2020-11-24 18:27:28 UTC

Yeah the level 4 is ceramic which is good I was talking about the steel plates.

2020-11-24 18:27:33 UTC

Just don't go with steel plates. Too much weight for not enough projection. Plus the spall that comes off it can kill you.

2020-11-24 18:29:18 UTC

I would buy the ar500 level 4 plates because they are ceramic. I personally just wouldn't buy the steel stuff because it's heavy and bullets fragment to easily.

2020-11-24 18:29:21 UTC

I travel light with lv 3+ in my front carrier and back pack, my plates are probably expired......weight is everything to a grunt like me, ammo comes 1st..then protection
That sucks for ar500..

2020-11-24 18:29:56 UTC

Sounds like a good setup.

2020-11-24 18:30:55 UTC

gotcha ghost.

2020-11-24 18:31:06 UTC

3+ is what I went with as well.

2020-11-24 18:33:26 UTC

How many years is the Hesco good for? Body armor isn't something I want to use anytime soon so longer the felf life the better, particularly when as expensive as it is.

2020-11-24 18:33:29 UTC

Body armor is as complex as car engines, IMO. You need to balance your needs with the pros and cons of what you choose to run.

2020-11-24 18:34:29 UTC

As far as I know; longer than most. It's sealed in a water-proof sheath.

2020-11-24 18:34:39 UTC

jeez some of those hesco plates dont even way 6 pounds .-.

2020-11-24 18:35:08 UTC

weigh*

2020-11-24 18:35:12 UTC

Yeah they are stupid light.

2020-11-24 18:35:27 UTC

dude that sounds great for edc
