This here is an M21 Muncie. Quiet brother of the infamous "Rock Crusher"

The gears are cut at a 45 degree angle, which cuts down on noise. Ratios are the same. It's a road racing transmission

2.20:1 first gear doesn't lend itself well for off-the line acceleration unless you gear the rear end accordingly but my car should theoretically be able to do well into the 50s without shifting

Those are guide plates to keep the pushrods from deflecting at high RPM. Somebody also put a solid lifter camshaft in it that is noticeably choppy at idle

We think it's pushing somewhere in the low to mid 300 horsepower range

The lifters ride on this precision ground "stick" called a camshaft

This controls how far and for how long the valves open

Most vehicles today and many even back in the 60s had a hydraulic lifter. Oil pressure "pumps it up" and this compensates for any tolerance stacking or wear in the valvetrain, making it maintenance free. The downside is they don't typically perform well at high RPM
