At the bottom, they fit inside of these cylindrical objects that sit through bores in the casting

Those are the lifters

The lifters ride on this precision ground "stick" called a camshaft

This controls how far and for how long the valves open

Most vehicles today and many even back in the 60s had a hydraulic lifter. Oil pressure "pumps it up" and this compensates for any tolerance stacking or wear in the valvetrain, making it maintenance free. The downside is they don't typically perform well at high RPM

A solid lifter will not collapse, you don't have to worry about check valves failing, lifters having issues pumping up, etc.

A push rod V8.

I prefer twin cam I4’s but that’s just me. I have respect for the V8.

20 valve? The 4A-GE is usually 16 valve...

That can only mean one thing...

And the AE-86 is getting very rare and most already have 4A-GE’s in them.

From my understanding he imported the engine direct from Japan

so it’s not a boeing 747 engine

No it’s a Ford small block 302

Bugatti Type 35 or Cadillac Model Thirty
