Most wars and conflicts are simple to understand when you look at if from a resource point of view. There was a plan that middle-eastern countries, mainly saudi arabia, would build a pipeline that went through the middle-east and to the mediterranean sea where it would go up to italy, where there are huge ports with the capacity to take on supertankers, from where it would be easily accessible to the market.

This would cut the cost of transportation and it would double the output compared to when it had to go all around the middle east and through the suez canal (which can only take small tankers specifically made for this) with the annoying possibility of iran just cutting off access to the persian guld where all oil is transported.

And well... iran was not to be included in this deal, and since syria is a pal of iran they too said no, which was a problem since the pipeline would have to go through syria. This is where the radical extremist, and their american and european support of them comes in to play.
