I viewed a microcosm of this assimilation problem when I went to college...the school that I went to has about 10% Hawaiian students make up their student body, and I came in with this freshman class and there were some Hawaiian students on my dorm floor. Right away they had a REALLY hard time

oh for sure. ones that came over with families have the burden of putting their kids to a better place so they work very hard. those that came alone might not have the same motivation
