Because villagers 2000 years ago if they didn't have coins to donate to the temple ( or to Pharisees ) they had to donate ( their animals ) - so the Phraisees could earn for a living and eat. Pharisees preach that you need material object to connect to one God. Pharisees are hidden - the belief of Pharisees remaind within religious Jews. They tried to push the "name" of one God to all other Hebrew tribes, by denying others that they don't know one God if they don't use the name they are using, and also that they don't know one God if they are not following their rituals. Pharisees were the only authority that was justified and followed by most Jews ( except ones who started to believe Yeshua- or Jesus ).

Belief that Pharisees know the true way remained.

They are well hidden.

But they reveal themselves proudly because they have to show to others when they pray and how they pray to one God - by trying to reveal how they are the only ones contacting one God in the right way - which is of course false.

Jesus or Yeshua was a Pharisee too. But only he recognized everything false that they were doing. Because he finally recognized himself that he was a Messiah.
