I read once that in Europe eggs are not washed & therefore keep their natural outter protective layer & bacteria doesn't get inside the egg but in the US the eggs are washed & the natural layer being removed results in bacteria getting in, meaning that they have to be refrigerated tto prevent bacterial growth
