very basic principle of God's curse is that when people become whores and pagans they will be beaten to death by the mightier pagans than themselves and all their lovers. It's a process that has repeated many many times in history
though it is rare, the turn around of a society also has happened before too, in which case the society actually can regenerate and rebuild very quickly
doing the correct things only seems hard from the standpoint where society is fallen, but it's actually the path of least resistance. It takes a lot more effort to continue in the way of evil
