The involuntary bleeding through his eyes was the initiator thereof.. The Well being the lies.. to whom most people submit to.. but him looking past it.. seeing Jesus-- the truth..

i think the bleeding in the eyes is him being forced to look at his secrets, or secrets he knows of, trying to ignore them. The well is obviously the Mind. The people being in darkness around it the secrets. The fear rising in looking at the woman a particularly deep secret. This is double confirmed then in the fear of the eyes of Light, searching through him until it comes to one particular secret that elicits so much fear it causes him to awaken

this last thing the eyes of Light saw is probably the same as whatever the woman represents
