@timsandtoms Sure, but then I wouldn't know how to use a whetstone

2018-05-27 04:25:30 UTC

I mean do buy stuff just to own it? I also bought the bm series for shit and giggles, but I also tried them all in different setups..

2018-05-27 04:25:32 UTC

which is the point

2018-05-27 04:26:38 UTC

@Sdeck37 Not really, but I definitely don't only buy things I 100% NEED, I buy things I'd have fun using, or have a good use for. I don't do Funcopop or any of that shit that just sits on a shelf.

2018-05-27 04:27:22 UTC

Yes, but shopping as a hobby would imply the women movie cliché of buying a dress and never wearing it.

2018-05-27 04:27:53 UTC

>being so afraid of being perceived as feminine that you won't embrace your hobby

2018-05-27 04:27:55 UTC

@Matthew Honestly, free-handing a whetstone is one of those skills where it's not BAD to know, but there are so much better and more cost effective ways in today's world. Get a jig to sharpen with, just a guide for the stone.

2018-05-27 04:27:56 UTC

At least in my opinion.

2018-05-27 04:27:57 UTC

real brainlet hours

2018-05-27 04:27:58 UTC

@Matthew the secret is a lot of old timers couldn't sharpen for shit. Dont bother picking up a lot of old knives because of the absolutly pig disgusting changes to edge geometry

2018-05-27 04:28:02 UTC

Just use a jig

2018-05-27 04:29:28 UTC

Just something easy like this.

2018-05-27 04:29:43 UTC

What is that?

2018-05-27 04:29:54 UTC

You still need to do it right, you just don't need to get the muscle memory so down that you can free hand it.

2018-05-27 04:30:01 UTC

One sec I'll get a pic

2018-05-27 04:31:06 UTC

2018-05-27 04:31:12 UTC

Also Matthew, what has any of that to do with being perceived as female?

2018-05-27 04:31:34 UTC

And where do you put the knife there?

2018-05-27 04:31:36 UTC

How are AliExpress waterstones?

2018-05-27 04:31:43 UTC

It's a chisel sharpener.

2018-05-27 04:31:53 UTC

Or at least a chisel jig.

2018-05-27 04:31:55 UTC

Well for a knife, you'd need something else, they have ones that clamp on the back

2018-05-27 04:32:02 UTC

But that idea

2018-05-27 04:32:07 UTC

Simple little guide jig

2018-05-27 04:32:14 UTC

Good.
Though I ordered two and only one made it

2018-05-27 04:32:42 UTC

My big thing is I need the flattening stone

2018-05-27 04:32:54 UTC

What for?

2018-05-27 04:33:08 UTC

To flatten my stones

2018-05-27 04:33:09 UTC

I feel a plate of glass and sandpaper would do the same job better

2018-05-27 04:33:12 UTC

They're concave.

2018-05-27 04:33:23 UTC

Ouh

2018-05-27 04:33:44 UTC

Glass and sandpaper(the "scary sharp" method) is great, but not cost effective.

2018-05-27 04:34:07 UTC

I mean for flattening stones

2018-05-27 04:34:31 UTC

Depends

2018-05-27 04:34:38 UTC

Oh. Well, same argument. Longer timeline.

2018-05-27 04:35:26 UTC

If you got a business nearby which works with glass, they might give you some cut pieces for free.

2018-05-27 04:35:47 UTC

I think he means for sandpaper.

2018-05-27 04:35:47 UTC

Then it's a question of sandpaper

2018-05-27 04:35:51 UTC

I work at Lowe's, I can just get a granite tile scrap

2018-05-27 04:36:28 UTC

Memorials?

2018-05-27 04:36:48 UTC

Machined/polished stone or float glass are both about as flat a reference surface as most folks will ever need or encounter
