I think that Trump fundamentally changed this dynamic... He learned with the Birther movement that he could convince people of the most ridiculous things. Trump doesn't care about polls... He thinks he can tell his supporters how they should feel about any given issue - and, to date, he has been right. Facts or reason be damned.
