We also didn't have the internet -- with immediate response available anywhere and could share videos and evidence of wrongdoing on a mass scale. For four election cycles, maybe. And its probably a constantly increasing irritant seeing nothing addressed, many cover ups, no accountability. Insanely obvious partisanship to the polar extremes and constantly divides divide divide. Race baiting. Fear porn. And rage became a method for both profit and control.

So while I think the government has been this bad and still uses the same methods. Those methods had never been leaked on such a scale as Snowden/Assange and independent users online.
