Do you know that Congress is exempt from the ADA (Act)?

2020-12-22 20:45:21 UTC

I wish I could determine my Pay Raise and Vote on it?

2020-12-22 20:47:23 UTC

Yeah that is crazy

2020-12-22 20:47:57 UTC

I'm not complaining. Tenure is a Sweet Deal.

2020-12-22 20:52:12 UTC

I think tenure and subsidized loans have turned university into a pyramid scheme.

2020-12-22 20:53:13 UTC

Off topic 😂

2020-12-22 20:54:05 UTC

Maybe if your Phd is in Lesbian Dance Theory?

2020-12-22 20:56:03 UTC

Agreed. I mean our GTAs went on strike once and I spoke with some of them. The Econ, computer science and math GTAs all got paid well. It was other departments that suffered.

2020-12-22 20:58:56 UTC

That may be a Million Dollar Question. How does one place a Value on Labor?

2020-12-22 21:06:55 UTC

Market prices are the convergence of all opinions on that very question.

2020-12-22 21:07:47 UTC

So imo it’s been sufficiently answered. But I guess the GTAs disagreed.

2020-12-22 21:08:49 UTC

If that is True? What is the need for a Minimum Wage?

2020-12-22 21:13:13 UTC

Makes people feel better. Minimum wage leads to unemployment and/or smaller job markets. There are a couple studies contesting this but they are disingenuous. The only reason economist are not unanimous as they used to be is because they realized that they were funded by politicians and that being outspoken made them less likely to get fundings as well as disliked by other campus colleagues.

2020-12-22 21:14:31 UTC

Minimum wage is one of the most institutionally racist policies we have today. Pricing floors were first implemented to exclude black job seekers from undercutting white job seekers in bids for work.

2020-12-22 21:15:18 UTC

You have a whole lot there!

2020-12-22 21:16:53 UTC

I mean it’s definitely something which can be verified, it’s just hard to cut past the establishments propaganda. If you look at places like Seattle though, everyone agreed there was an increase in the velocity of money. IE Inflation

2020-12-22 21:17:33 UTC

It’s taboo to go against it and economist are all about incentives. Why argue over this one part when it’s just a small negative effect.

2020-12-22 21:17:56 UTC

I didn't State a Quality only Quantity!

2020-12-22 21:18:18 UTC

😂 fair enough

2020-12-22 21:19:52 UTC

Asking Questions is an Occupational Hazard for me!

2020-12-22 21:21:10 UTC

minimum wage is a bs trap and a myth solution to a problem. Living wage varies location to location. We need to figure ways to increase peoples market value.

2020-12-22 21:21:32 UTC

Asking questions is a sign of intelligence.

2020-12-22 21:23:19 UTC

I like to say seeking Answers....

2020-12-22 21:25:09 UTC

Lower entry to job markets, allow more businesses to flourish and people will learn skill sets that are marketable

2020-12-22 21:27:47 UTC

Yes, my only caveat is that we are killing small and middle tear business. monolithic companies are buying up everything creating a narrow market place to sell labor.

2020-12-22 21:28:29 UTC

Anti-Trust issues

2020-12-22 21:31:01 UTC

just replace it all with UBI of say $10k/month and none of us would have to work, correct?

2020-12-22 21:31:12 UTC

worse

2020-12-22 21:32:51 UTC

Unfortunately, raising the Floor creates an increased Ceiling?

2020-12-22 21:33:13 UTC

There is actually a great way to promote competition but no one likes to listen to economist lol. There is a number called the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. HH index does short. It measures how concentrated a market is. They could easily use it to impose high progressive taxes for companies in the top of their markets cutting out competitors. We are talking 30 percent or more. Or to break them up. Personally I would tax them at 40 % or more of revenue and am a capitalist. Of course a lot of that is just a consumer tax depending on the price elasticity. But you could curb how marginally profitable another percent of the market is. Also I would just get rid of all taxes except value added so make of it what you will.

2020-12-22 21:33:53 UTC

I agree but how so? ... I once had a dream about this, they declared UBI of $10k/month and I decided I could retire on that ... so I did, then I got up the next morning and the coffee shop was closed, and so was the grocery store, and convenience stores, etc ... seems everyone had the same idea as I regarding retirement

2020-12-22 21:34:49 UTC

You would just increase the velocity of money. And inflation would eat up your benefit. Negative taxes or social safety nets for poor people make sense. But if you introduced it across the board you would end up with no real long term benefit. You would have to increase it all of the time.

2020-12-22 21:34:55 UTC

I am not reading through the entire chat, but if there is a question about gun laws I might be able to help. I work in the industry.

2020-12-22 21:35:20 UTC

What would that do to the Price of a Hamburger at McDonald's?

2020-12-22 21:36:13 UTC

same price just McDonald's wouldn't be open ... at least, that was my dream of retirement turned into a nightmare

2020-12-22 21:36:24 UTC

We were discussing who can own automatic weapons. I think they should be legal for everyone without license or background check, getting an FFL seems like giving up some rights to exercise another right. And then I said I think you can machine your own full auto but wasn’t sure and Maw replied that FFL is how I would find out.

2020-12-22 21:36:25 UTC

@Gypsy, you just advanced to level 8!

2020-12-22 21:37:52 UTC

You would still have people working prices would just increase. And it would be relatively quick. Like 3 or 4 years is my guess but an economist would know better.

2020-12-22 21:38:18 UTC

Either way it would establish an increase. Either through a Supply and Demand or a increase in the cost of services/Goods.

2020-12-22 21:40:25 UTC

Getting an FFL is very difficult, because you have to set up an actual business. The ATF frowns on home based FFLs. Remember you have to have permission to run that type of business out of your home as far as zoning, and HOAs go. New full autos were banned from registration in 1986 due to the hughs amendment (thank you Reagan :/) So if it was not registered prior to the registration date, you cannot own it as an individual. There are a finite amount of FA guns in the registry so they are pricey. I agree 100% the NFA is a travesty and is unconstitutional. Hope this helps 🙂

2020-12-22 21:40:30 UTC

If you want basic income then you would means test it. But I would only be in favor of it was replacing other safety nets and was directly budgeted based on a funds left over after everything else was taken care of. And preferably still incentivized some work.
