Eh, it's kind of silly. If the shota/loli is not the main point then sure, the overall enjoyment of a show could go down but if the core is good then it shouldn't be that big of a problem that I think you make it sound like
Made in Abyss was never explicit. It was definitely *there*, but it wasn't porn.
And more importantly, the rest of the show redeemed it by a huge margin.
To the point that I recommended it to friends and family, with a disclaimer.
Made in Abyss manga was objectively worse than the anime because even though the pacing was better, the physicality of the characters was NEVER platonic, it was always sexual. Being dangled naked from the ceiling with no clothing on made a lot more sense in the anime when the characters do not understand what sex is, and just find it generally degrading like being made to stand in front of the class. In the manga it's creepy freaky pedo bait that the male characters (ten years old or less) are visibly trying not to jerk themselves off over.
