even getting it scanning on my PC consistently was a nightmare
SDR stuff is cool
yeah I'd like to improve the antenna some
If I were stuck in the middle of nowhere with just a laptop and a sdr kit I'd be happy
saw a gigantic antenna in a charity shop recently for a few pounds but decided against it
nowhere to put it unless I staple it outside
the extra hardware needed to pick up the HF stuff is a bit of a downer
otherwise you don't really need an antenna
the one that ships with most of the RTL-SDRs is fine for vhf/uhf
I struggle to get decent reception in my building for some reason
even with my baofeng
maybe from being in a tall building
no idea
try a cheap ducky swap first
if you have a repeater nearby use that as a reference
yeah the most I can pick up reliably is a childrens hospital and a local taxi service
would like to boost it up
since those are right outside
guessing you've been here https://www.ukrepeater.net/index.html
I put the ham radio stuff on the backburner to work on my vintage videos
come back to it at some point, baofeng and rtl-sdr are gathering dust
i mean, same; I never bothered to do HF stuff since, you know, the Internet exists. but it'd be cool to try to send signals over the atlantic or something
yeah I'd like to get my license
and learn more about it
I have a yaesu, puxing and baofeng vhf/uhf radios and tbh they're close in performance with stock antennae
the SDR sucks tho, that definitely could use tweaking
I used to have a realistic scanner but sold it recently
far too complicated to program
it was like doing a konami code every time you wanted to change signal
it's pointless if you have a usb sdr
and those things have shitty buttons
OTOH a HF Icom setup is really nice
I dream of finding one at a thrift shop for < $100
ham radio stuff is mega expensive yeah
pension wipers
I think you'll see more soon, the ham radio generation is already pretty old
once they start to die the thrift shops will have more
seems like it's all 70s stuff that's lining the shops now
