well what should i do instead of my tab system
How about some sqlite database with FTS4 and a browser addon to access it?
Yeah but I need proprietary drivers for my shittop to work but still haven't learned how all that shit works, it requires some learning curve
Debian has a nonfree iso with all obscure shit drivers included
I have a tab in this hell browser with the installgentoo wiki on it; I'm gonna read through that coming up.
You basically just put it on a USB stick and plug it in during install
It's magic
Unless you have a super specific use case, Gentoo and Arch won't give you a more stable or reliable system than Ubuntu. Just keep that in mind. Old hardware is also not a specific use case
That, and I've been thinking that maybe I try Android x86 instead and make the toaster a grocery list mule for the kitchen. It's a convertible tablet (you know the kind) so that would be nice. Still gotta learn how driver fuckery works since the given build of Android x86 can't boot, and I would need to compile my own kernel by the sound of things.
Isn't there an Android fork optimized for x86 and mouse input?
It wasn't android x86
It had another name
It was somewhere on the pine forums
Thanks for the advice. I still want to learn some of the specifics, so I can more easily handle issues and unusual installations.
Fuck I even tried it out on VirtualBox once and I loved it
No, I WANT the touch since this is an old convertible tablet.
Ah
Sure
But it's a convertible laptop, so with normal Android you'll only enjoy it in tablet mode
I'd mount it to the wall and use touch input plus an online list app for grocery stuff, and maybe have it run news and weather alers in the meantime.
It was really meant for convertibles
If you're interested dig through the pine forums. Otherwise go with android
Real meeting of the minds in here
Yes no Americans allowed
I've used x86, and it's okay for desktop use as-is.
Matt with nothing to add as usual. <:smug:589103776699252887>
In any case, Android x86 on a convertible tablet is hella cozy. Use touch for whatever, switch to mouse and keyboard when needed. It's sort-of comprehensive. Android apps are just missing some support for desktop use but are for the most part the same.
like sane privacy, proper settings, actual firewall, ...........
Pie got rid of the dedicated "X" to close apps in the app switcher, and Taskbar is crashy, so I just switch between full-screen apps like I already do on a phone.
or generaly any CONTROL over the device
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ @Tervy Just use an adult, desktop Windows PC if that's how you want to roll. I just dual- or multi- boot if I want to.
just saying sure it has potential but long long way to go
Android is unironically cozy if you're doing lighter tasks.
not that there is nice alternatives unless some custom setup is considered

🤔 Actually, you can totally skip handing over any data if you want to, if you're using a third-party build like Lineage. You can totally skip having Google stuff installed. Have you never looked into this before? @Tervy Are you memeing me?
Matt, please enlighten us about something you're working on right now.
Nothing, because everything I have is working.
*because I haven't broken it*.
You would have to compile your own build of Android x86 to totally skip the botnet, which is another reason I want to learn Linux stuff
