Yup.

2019-05-17 17:54:49 UTC

Is a theory admissible as proof?

2019-05-17 17:54:49 UTC

Gravity holds our atmosphere in place.

2019-05-17 17:54:52 UTC

Nope.

2019-05-17 17:54:54 UTC

It's not a theory.

2019-05-17 17:54:57 UTC

And there is proof.

2019-05-17 17:55:03 UTC

Yes, it is a theory. Sorry.

2019-05-17 17:55:10 UTC

Ever thought of how we stay on the ground?

2019-05-17 17:55:13 UTC

And therefore not admissible as proof at all.

READ THIS.

2019-05-17 17:56:05 UTC

YES IT HAS BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN TO EXIST YOU ABSOLUTE CRETIN

2019-05-17 17:56:40 UTC

EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE GRAVITY YOURSELF I HOPE NOT EVEN A SINGLE PERSON WILL BE ATTRACTED TO YOU. @Derek Nelson

2019-05-17 17:57:28 UTC

As you measure.

2019-05-17 17:57:53 UTC

And again, I’m sorry. Gravity has never, ever been proven.

2019-05-17 17:58:53 UTC

If the theory of relativity were proven, it would cease to be called a theory. But it hasn’t.

2019-05-17 18:02:16 UTC

Perhaps you boys need to retake basic English.

2019-05-17 18:02:46 UTC

No thanks.

2019-05-17 18:03:59 UTC

Yes, theorists love to dress up their theories with words they can’t prove.

2019-05-17 18:04:11 UTC

hmm

2019-05-17 18:04:13 UTC

i wonder

2019-05-17 18:04:31 UTC

```Because somewhere around 1900, the fashion changed, especially in physics. Theory had tended to mean "far-fetched, over-complicated, speculative explanation" and law had tended to mean "well-established regularity, presumptively decreed as a literal law for natural things by God". Suddenly that changed. Scientists kept discovering interesting regularities, but pretty much stopped calling them laws. Conversely, "theory" became the neutral term for a logically structured attempt to explain something.
I don't know for sure, but I speculate this was due to two things: (i) by about 1900, scientists had created a number of large-scale theories that were wildly successful in making substantive and falsifiable predictions, including (retrospectively) Newtonian mechanics, as well as electromagnetism, thermodynamics, the atomic theory in chemistry, evolution, etc, and (ii) geology and evolutionary biology had really deep-sixed the credibility of traditional religion on natural history, so the presumption that scientists were discovering literal laws had come to look a bit unseemly.```
