Restaurants could lose a lot of money selling fake as real. Customers are very picky eaters. They absolutely would sue if buying fake as real. I am sure in the most expensive restaurants you would never find this.

I do however live in an area that is a large producer of maple syrup

Doesn't matter if you're in an area where it's produced or not. They can be imported

And unless Steve tells gives me some evidence that all maple syrup is fake, then I have no reason to believe it is.
