Herd immunity works like this:
1. Everyone gets vaccinated but a few who can't/wont
2. The disease is mostly eradicated in the population bc of vaccinations
3. Those unable or unwilling to get vaccinations are protected bc there are so few instances of a disease thanks to vaccinations
3.5. When a disease does attempt an outbreak, the vaccinated population acts almost as a barries, stopping the disease from progressing

The issue with saying 'well then i shouldn't vaccinate my kids' is that for herd immunity to work, the unvaccinated need to be a statistically insignificant number.
High numbers of anti-vaxxers provide a societal infection vector, acting like carriers of infectious disease, and this can infect and harm those who didn't get vaccinated bc of medical issues

and the reason measles is back is because people who thought vaccines where bad started picking measles again and since it was considered completely gone so there was no point vaccinating the kids but guess what there back because of anti vaxxers

Also vaccines aren't 100% effective, this is why herd immunity is important—the 1% who vaccines don't work for need to be protected by herd immunity
