The reason why ships disappear is because of the globe, however, it is not the entire solution. Using a different example, if one were to stand in the middle of a pair of rail lines, it will appear that the two tracks are converging as you look farther and farther away until they just disappear. However, this is due to the way human sight works, rather than the case with the earth.
