yeah that would be atmospheric distortion projecting the images of both celestial bodies minutes before they actually reach those positions relative to the viewer

Or its just as it is. The sun and the moon above horizon while moon is darkening from the top down. No reason to believe distortion nonsense just to cling to a belief

No it wouldn't be as is because the atmosphere is a layer over the planet that exists, meaning that light is going to be manipulated by it to some degree relative to the viewer. Nor does this at all refute the simple fact that the sun and moon are by no means visible at the same time most of the time

Which still means that the given flat earth model is incorrect. And no, the moon does not darken anything. That is quite literally a completely unsubstantiated belief.
