MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) —
(The video above talks about what parents of young children can do to prevent their child from becoming a victim of sex trafficking)
A 22-year-old woman says she was taken from Columbia to Myrtle Beach where she was forced into prostitution, according to a police report filed Tuesday with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The woman told police that she was taken from Columbia, briefly through Charlotte, and then to Myrtle Beach. She said it happened between Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
According to the report, the woman said that the person took her against her will and threatened to hurt her family.
She said she was "forced to participate as a prostitute in a sex trafficking operation against her will,” the report said.
The woman was eventually able to get away and was taken to a hospital.
"MBPD, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, is actively investigating the incident to determine the facts that surround this case," Myrtle Beach Police Capt. Joey Crosby said via email. "This is an active and fluid investigation, and additional details will be released as they become available."
The South Carolina Office of the Attorney General is relaunching the Coastal Region Human Trafficking Task Force.
The task force is designed to raise awareness and help prevent human trafficking crimes along the coastal region of South Carolina, something one local security officer says would be beneficial for anyone.
"I think Myrtle Beach is becoming - if it hasn't already - prime location for sex trafficking because it such a large tourist area," Katie Osterling, a Myrtle Beach resident said. "It's obvious that people are not on guard with keeping the kids safe and parenting not being a priority like it should be.
