Jurors awarded $45.4 million Thursday to a girl who suffered two years of sexual abuse in an El Monte home where county social workers left her despite evidence showing that an accused molester lived in the house.
The Department of Children and Family Services, jurors found, ignored warning signs of potential abuse and failed to tell police what they knew, leaving the then-7-year-old to be molested by at least four men whom her mother invited into the home.
Jurors deliberated four and half hours before deciding to make the massive award. They attributed 45% of the blame for the girl’s ordeal to DCFS, a finding that requires the county to pay more than $20 million of the verdict.
“She endured two years of sex abuse you cannot imagine,” said David Ring, an attorney for the girl’s father, who sued the agency and the perpetrators on behalf of his daughter. “The Department of Children and Family Services is the last line of defense for defenseless children, and they walked away here and let her be abused.”

SACRAMENTO (KRON) - California Governor Jerry Brown is declaring a State of Emergency for two counties battling massive wildfires.
The issue was sent out at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for Shasta and Riverside counties.
The "Carr Fire" in Shasta County and "Cranston Fire" in Riverside County have both destroyed homes and structures, "threatened critical infrastructure, and forced residents to evacuate.

JACKSON, Miss. – The FBI Jackson Violent Crimes Task Force in Mississippi located two fugitives accused of molesting several children in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
According to the FBI in Oregon, Victoria Michelle Cravitz and her common law husband Leon Henry Shaw have been fugitives since October 2000.
Cravitz, who was going by the name Jennifer Larsen, took Shaw to a hospital for medical care. Shaw died of natural causes at the hospital and investigators began looking into his true identity when the hospital tried generating a death certificate.
The FBI says Shaw and Cravitz were wanted for their alleged involvement in the sexual molestation of several children between the ages of six and 17 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Officials say the crimes occurred between December 1989 and February 1999.
On Jan. 7, 2000, a circuit court judge in Klamath County issued arrest warrants for Shaw and Cravitz. Shaw faced two counts of sodomy, four counts of sex abuse, five counts of rape, six counts of felon in possession of a firearm, and obstructing governmental administration charges.
Cravitz faced three counts of rape in the first degree and one count of sodomy in the first degree.
On Oct. 12, 2000, a federal judge in Medford issued unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrants for Shaw and Cravitz.
"Our County intends to prosecute Ms. Cravitz to the full extent of the law. Her and her husband's abuse of multiple children have create [sic] long term negative ramifications for many individuals. The allegations involve the kidnap, rape and torture of a number of young girls since before 2000 when the case first came to light to DHS. DHS was able to intervene, but Ms. Cravitz and Mr. Shaw took off out of county. We are glad to see their whereabouts determined and plan to seek justice for the victims,” said Klamath County District Attorney Eve Costello.
Cravitz appeared before a federal magistrate in the Southern District of Mississippi Thursday and will be extradited back to Oregon to face federal and state charges.
