The number of missing juveniles in Iowa is not out of the ordinary, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
"In light of the missing person investigation of Mollie Tibbetts, concerns have come to light about the number of juveniles reported missing in Iowa in recent weeks," Iowa DPS said in a statement.
4,311 juveniles were reported missing to The Missing Person Information Clearinghouse in FY2017, an average of approximately 12 juveniles a day. The vast majority of which are found or returned home within 24 hours—typically, these cases are runaway situations.
The number of missing juveniles reported in recent weeks is in line with historical numbers.

OTTUMWA - A woman is in jail on Friday after she's accused of murdering her daughter.
According to Ottumwa Police, on July 19 at approximately 3:22 p.m., officers received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive five year-old female at a residence located at 127 North James Street in Ottumwa. Police and Fire crews responded to the home. The child was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center where she was pronounced deceased. The Ottumwa Police Department requested assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation with the death investigation.
Earlier this week, Ottumwa police and special agents with the Iowa DCI conducted search warrants and several interviews.
On Thursday, members of the Ottumwa Police Department and the Iowa DCI interviewed Kelsie Thomas, 22 years old, the mother of the child. During this interview, Thomas admitted to killing her daughter.
Thomas was then arrested and is being held in the Wapello County Jail. Thomas was charged with Murder in the First Degree. No bond has been set at this time until Thomas has an initial arraignment on the charge.

Authorities addressed Iowans’ concerns Friday over a long list of names on the Missing Person Information Clearinghouse website.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety said the missing person investigation of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts sparked concerns over the number of juveniles reported missing in Iowa in recent weeks.
Authorities said that in the last year, 4,311 juveniles were reported missing to the Missing Person Information Clearinghouse -- an average of 12 juveniles per day.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the “vast majority” of missing persons listed are found or returned home within 24 hours.
Authorities said many missing person cases listed on the Missing Person Information Clearinghouse are runaway situations.
The number of missing juveniles reported in recent weeks is in line with historical numbers.
